I've been a full time freelance makeup artist for 4 1/2 years. Being hygienic is my #1 priority. Here are some HELL NO's that you shouldn't be doing as a MUA.
1 . DONT BLOW
Please don't be that makeup artist that blows! Hehehe. No really, never ever use your own breath and blow on any makeup products. Like to dry lash glue, to blow makeup fallout off of your clients cheeks and especially don't blow on your clients face thinking that is going to speed up the process of something drying like eyeliner.
2 . NO DOUBLE DIPPING!
Do you go out to eat and walk up to a strangers table and grab their cup and drink out of it?!? Uhmmm, Let's hope not! Well, this is pretty much the same thing. As a makeup artist you want your client to trust that you take their health seriously. You want your clients to know that you wouldn't use a makeup product that you didn't clean after (like brushes) or that you didn't use some makeup directly from the product (creams, liners) without using a disposable. This causes spreading of germs and bacteria and contamination of your makeup as well. Disposables will be your best friend! Always use your spatula to scoop or scrape out product and a metal palette to mix and place your cream, gels and liquids.
3 . Never Run Late!
You want to set yourself apart from other artists. What's so special about you?!? Is your work incredible? Yes! But are you dependable? That is even more important! No one wants to book someone who is known to be "Flakey" or just very careless with time. If I have a photoshoot and call time is at 9am and it takes 30mins to get there...I always leave an hour and a half earlier. I want to give my self time if something does happen like a flat tire or traffic that I have time to handle that plus be on time to my client. I know "LIFE" happens but make sure you have open communication.
4 . Using expired Makeup!
Replace your makeup regularly! Do you have a favorite foundation you use on your clients that expired but you haven't used the Whole bottle yet? Whelp, unfortunately you need to still throw it away and invest in a new bottle/s. Using expired makeup is very unhygienic, causing you to transfer nasty bacteria in between your clients! The formula also changes over time and can become a irritant to the skin. So better safe than sorry! Throw that expired makeup out.
5 . Forgetting to wash hands
This is probably one of the most disgusting things you can do as a makeup artist. If you don't have hand sanitizer in your kit on top of washing your hands then you're probably a suspect of this! I make sure I have a bottle of sanitizer on display. Before I start on my client I make them fully aware that I am cleaning my hands. This just makes them more comfortable to know that you care about hygiene as much as you do about glamming them up. Be clean! There's nothing more horrifying to your career then being known as that makeup artist that caused a client to have a severe eye infection, etc.
6 . Not cleaning makeup and brushes
As a Makeup artist, you need to be on top of cleaning and sanitizing your makeup products at all times. Makeup can quickly become contaminated if you aren't careful. Sanitizing in between each client is absolutely necessary (I use Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner) and deep cleaning your makeup brushes every night before the next day of clients. (I use Merman Brush Soap). Everything down to lipliners, sharpeners and eyelash curlers have to be sanitized. I spray "Beauty so Clean" to disinfect.
