10 Products you need in your Makeup Kit
As Makeup Artists, we all have our own way of doing makeup. Some products work for us and some don't. We all have our favorites that we keep stocked so that they are available on hand. Here is a list that I rounded up of what you need in your kit that are for me, "The Holy Grails!"
March 10, 2017
1. Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder (Retails: $38.00 on Sephora.Com )
This is a cult-favorite and award winning setting powder that locks in makeup for long lasting wear. I have tried so many setting powders and I always revert back to this one! It gives your skin that "Real Life Photoshop" look. It instantly blurs your skin and covers enlarged pores when you push it into the skin creating this perfect canvas. I love that it is very universal and can be used on all skin tones from fair to deep shades. Laura Mercier just released a new Translucent Medium Deep Powder. I just ordered that one and I'll be sure to keep you updated. It is supposed to be the same formula but the powder is a golden brown translucent shade.
2. Beauty Sponge
(Retails: $20.00 on http://camerareadycosmetics.com/#oid12345_1234 )
What is a Beauty Blender? It's a edgeless beauty sponge that comes in a variety of colors. I have used the original beauty blender for so long and it has become a part of my beauty routine as well as my routine for clients. As a Makeup Artist the Original Beauty Blender can get quite expensive, especially since good sanitation between clients is so important. It is best to throw them out after 2 months. I have always tried to get a dupe for the "Original" but every other one has been too Dense until I tried out the Morphe "Flawless Beauty Sponge" (Retails for $6.99 Code: KIMJLUV will get you a 10% off discount on MorpheBrushes.Com) You are able to use them Dry or Wet. I love using them dry when applying foundation and using them damp with setting powder so you don't get that dry "powdery" look.
3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Palette
(Retails $88.00 AnastasiaBeverlyHills.Com)
This is such a Must Have for my MUAs. It contains 11 shades of brow powder duo and a brow primer all in the palm of your hand! Regardless if your client has thin to no brows or full and thick brows, this can be used. The brow primer can be brushed on the brow first. It gives this kind of tacky feeling to prep your brows. Then you take the powder and brush it on top of that primer. You can go as deep/dark with it or add a little powder for a more natural look.
4. Mac Mineralized Skin Finish
(Retails $33.00 without a pro discount on MacCosmetics.Com)
I'm all about skin! When my clients come to me they know I am ready to give them this flawless, glowy skin. This powder sits perfectly on top of the skin. After I set the skin with that Laura Mercier Powder I knock color back into the skin with these powders as well as contour and highlight. This powder comes in 18 different shades.
5. Make Up For Ever Aqua Xl Waterproof Eye Pencils
(Retails $21.00 on Sephora.Com You can also apply for a pro discount on MakeupForever.Com to get 30-40% off)
These stay in my kit!!!! "M-16" Matte White, "M-10" Matte Black and "M-4" Matte Pastel Yellow. When I tell you these don't budge, I absolutely mean it! These eye pencils are ideal for glamming up your client whether that be for her wedding, special occasion/event or a photoshoot, these work perfectly! You want to offer a service that is gonna last them hours! After all, that is what they are paying you for. I use these for the water line. The black for the smokey looks, and the white and yellow to open and brighten the eyes.
6. Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner
(Retails for $36.00 for the large bottle on http://camerareadycosmetics.com/#oid12345_1234 )
As a Makeup Artist it is most important to keep your makeup and brushes clean and sanitized. No double dipping! No sharing brushes! You have to clean your brushes in between clients. The fastest way to do that is with the Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner. It's quick drying and sanitizes. It is safe to use on natural and synthetic hairs
7. Makeup forever Step 1 Primers
(Retails for $37.00 without a pro discount on Sephora.Com)
Prepping and moisturizing skin is the most important part of your makeup application. I love that Step 1 has Primers for all skin needs. If you have oily skin, you will need a mattifying primer. If you are dry, you'll need a hydrating primer. If you have enlarged pores, you'll need a smoothing primer and so on. Step 1 has everyone covered.
8. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes
(Retails $4.99 Target.Com)
When working on a client you want to always make sure you are starting off with clean skin. Even if they come to you or you travel to them and it appears that they have nothing on their face you want to make sure that there isn't any previous makeup or other type of debris left on the skin. This just refreshes your face. This will take off even the most water proof makeup your clients may have on.
9. Morphe Brushes
(Prices vary. You can purchase single brushes or sets. Code: KIMJLUV will get you 10% off your order on MorpheBrushes.Com)
I have been using Morphe for 4 years, pretty much since the start of my freelance career! I love that the brushes are very affordable. My 2 favorite collections are Flawless and Rose Gold. They both have brushes that can execute a whole face. They both have a range of eye and face brushes. Morphe brushes are a kit staple.
10. Melanie Mills Body Radiance
(Retails for $15-$40 Code: KIMJLUV will get you a 20% off discount on MelanieMillsHollywood.Com)
You will definitely see a lot of skin products on this list! Lol! This is another skin must have for your kit. Perfect for all skin types, skin tones and any event- Bridal, Photoshoot, TV/film. It is a makeup, moisturizer, primer, and glow all in one. You can mix with foundation, wear alone for a natural, glows look, and is great for the body too! There are 4 shades. Rose Gold, Disco Gold, Deep Gold and Bronze Gold.
